Industry Initiatives

CLIA member cruise lines are committed to providing clean and sanitary environments aboard our vessels, and appropriate medical facilities and care for our guests. We’ve undertaken several additional initiatives to make our commitment even stronger.

We convened a Medical Facilities Working Group, which is made up of licensed and experienced shipboard physicians, fleetwide medical directors and consultants. They meet regularly to review cruise ship medical care and discuss the feasibility of introducing new practices and technology to shipboard medical facilities.

In the instance a tragic event occurs, we have worked diligently to make sure cruise ship employees are trained to handle such incidents. We worked with the Family Assistance Foundation to develop a training DVD for employees on how to handle passengers who may need assistance during the unlikely event of a tragedy. CLIA-member cruise lines are also encouraged to have Guest Care Teams whose primary mission is to handle such incidents and determine the level of care and assistance that may be needed. We are also working with the Sexual Assault Resource Service to expand current training on sexual assault evidence collection.
